What It Actually Is

Why your paint
looks dull

Those fine spider-web scratches you see under sunlight or a petrol station canopy are swirl marks — thousands of tiny scratches in the clear coat, almost always caused by washing. They scatter light instead of reflecting it, which is what makes dark paint look grey and flat.

Machine polishing removes a microscopically thin layer of that clear coat, levelling it so light reflects cleanly again. That's the difference between paint that has been corrected and paint that has merely been filled — a glaze or all-in-one will hide swirls for a few weeks, then they come back with the first proper wash.

01

Stage 1

Single-Stage Correction
60 – 70% of defects removed

One refining pass with a machine polisher. Removes the majority of light swirl marks, wash marring and dullness, and leaves a deep, reflective gloss — without removing meaningful clear coat.

  • Full decontamination wash, iron fallout & tar removal
  • Clay treatment to leave the paint perfectly smooth
  • Single-stage machine polish across all painted panels
  • Light swirls, haze and wash marring removed
  • Gloss refined and paint cleansed
  • Sealant or wax protection applied

Deeper scratches, sanding marks and heavy random-isolated-deep-scratch (RIDS) defects need a Stage 2 or 3-stage correction.

02

Stage 2

Two-Stage Correction
80 – 90% of defects removed

A cutting stage followed by a refining stage. The cutting pass removes the defects; the refining pass removes the haze the cutting stage leaves behind, so you get correction AND clarity rather than one at the expense of the other.

  • Everything in Stage 1
  • Dedicated cutting stage to remove deeper swirls & scratches
  • Second refining stage to restore full clarity and gloss
  • Paint depth readings taken before correction
  • Defect removal checked under dedicated inspection lighting
  • Long-lasting protection applied to the corrected finish

Scratches deep enough to catch a fingernail may be improved rather than fully removed — we always tell you honestly before we start.

3-Stage

Show-Level Correction
95%+ of defects removed

Heavy cut, refine, then a final jewelling pass. The last stage is about outright clarity — the kind of wet, liquid reflection you normally only see on a show stand.

  • Everything in Stage 2
  • Heavy cutting stage for severe defects and oxidation
  • Intermediate refining stage
  • Final jewelling/burnishing pass for maximum clarity
  • Panel-by-panel paint depth mapping throughout
  • Ceramic coating strongly recommended to lock the finish in

Corrections this deep are limited by how much clear coat the vehicle has left. We measure first, and we will never polish paint past what is safe.

How We Work

Measured,
not guessed

Clear coat is a finite resource — most cars have somewhere around 100–150 microns of paint in total, and only a fraction of that is the clear coat we can safely work with. That's why we measure before we polish.

1
Paint depth readings taken across every panel
2
Test section polished and inspected to find the least aggressive combination that works
3
Correction stages carried out panel by panel
4
Finish checked under dedicated inspection lighting — with you, if you want to see it
5
Protection applied: sealant, wax or a ceramic coating
Straight Talk

What we won't do

  • Polish paint past what's safe to chase one last scratch
  • Fill defects with glaze and call it correction
  • Apply a ceramic coating over uncorrected, swirled paint
  • Promise a result we haven't seen the car to judge

If a stage 2 won't get your paint where you want it, we'll tell you before you book — not after we've taken the money.

Lock It In

Correction, then protection

Correction is permanent — but only until the next bad wash. Finishing corrected paint with a ceramic coating keeps that finish sharp for years and makes the car far easier to clean. It's why the All In One includes both.

““I recently had my car professionally valeted and I’m extremely impressed with the results. Jack did a fantastic job inside and out – the paintwork was spotless, the interior looked and smelled fresh, and even the hard-to-reach areas were cleaned thoroughly. He was punctual, friendly, and paid great attention to detail. My vans looks almost brand new again. Great value for money and I would definitely recommend his service to anyone looking for a high-quality valet.””

Machine Polishing · FAQ

Questions answered

A stage 1 is a single refining pass — it removes roughly 60–70% of light swirls and wash marring and delivers a big jump in gloss. A stage 2 adds a dedicated cutting stage before the refining stage, removing 80–90% of defects including deeper swirls. Stage 2 takes considerably longer, which is why it costs more.
Not when it is done properly. Polishing removes a few microns of clear coat, so we take paint depth readings before we start and work to safe limits. Most modern cars can be safely corrected several times over their life. The damage we see far more often comes from automatic car washes and poor wash technique, not from correct machine polishing.
It removes scratches that sit within the clear coat. The rule of thumb: if your fingernail catches in the scratch, it is likely too deep to remove completely and we will aim to reduce its visibility instead. We will always tell you honestly what is achievable before any work starts.
The correction itself is permanent — the defects are gone. How long it keeps looking that way comes down to how the car is washed afterwards. Protected with a ceramic coating and washed correctly, a corrected finish stays sharp for years. Put back through an automatic car wash, swirls will return within months.
It is the ideal time. Correction gives you flawless paint; a ceramic coating locks that finish in and makes it far easier to keep. Applying a coating over uncorrected paint just seals the swirls in, which is why we only apply coatings after correction work.
Yes — all our correction work is fully mobile. We arrive with our own power, water and inspection lighting. We just need reasonable access to the vehicle on a driveway or off-road space, ideally under cover or out of direct sun for the longer jobs.

One Panel, Not The Whole Car

Deep scratch
repair

Polishing removes what sits in the lacquer. A scratch you can catch a fingernail in has gone through it, and no amount of machine work brings that back — it needs filling, levelling and blending instead. That is a different job, priced by the damage rather than by the car, from £140.

  • Colour matched to your paint code
  • Paint built up in thin layers, then levelled by hand
  • Machine polished to blend into the surrounding panel
  • We will tell you honestly if it is really a bodyshop job
